Fever, cough and congestion – the doctor said it was the respiratory flu. Not exactly how I wanted the year to begin. I tried to look on the positive side; I had been healthy through the holidays. But as the days passed and I didn’t feel any better, discouragement set in and my thoughts became negative. Ever been there?

I’m not an early morning person. Getting out of a warm bed in the dark isn’t very appealing. When I wake up, I have a choice to make: embrace the day with all its God-given potential, or be lazy and simply roll over and drift back to sleep.
Have you ever noticed how quickly things get off track when you don’t do what you’re supposed to do? My normal morning routine looks something like this: take care of our pets, exercise, read my Bible and pray, get ready for the day. But when I choose to sleep in, I end up having to skip my exercise or postpone my Bible study until later. Yes, sleep is important – but discipline has a place in my life too.

I love the thought of a fresh start. A new beginning. A blank slate with all kinds of possibilities. There’s just something about a new year that fills me with anticipation. I’ve been reading through the book of Deuteronomy and was recently reminded of the importance of seeking God and His wisdom for every new beginning. Whether we’re entering a new year, a new decade of life, or just a new day – God’s Word contains exactly what we need.
