7 Tips to Get Your Writing Noticed

How have you been doing on your writing? We’ve talked about the importance of beginning with prayer and having a servant-attitude when it comes to your readers. Today we’ll take a look at content. Is it really a big deal? In a world saturated with articles and blog posts, you bet it is.

What will help your writing stand out? What will draw readers to your writing and cause them to share it with others?

Things to consider

1. Come up with an attention-getting title. Something that compels people to read your article. (You can discover more about constructing a great title in this post on Problogger.)

2. Be sure your opening paragraph draws them in. What is the main point of your article and how does it meet your reader’s need? (Click here for a fantastic post from Copyblogger, including ways to hook your reader.)

3. Stick with one main point. Experts say our attention span is roughly 8 seconds. That doesn’t allow for chasing rabbits.

4. Use quality graphics. Pictures draw attention and also serve to break up text. Create your own using free tools like Pixabay for graphics and Picmonkey to personalize them.

5. Write tight. Avoid unnecessary words. This means you’ll want to edit and re-edit before unveiling your piece to the public. (For tips and tricks to improve your writing, read Michael Hyatt’s post.)

6. Give examples from your life. One thing I’ve heard over and over from ladies who have read my Bible study, “I love the real-life examples. It helped me apply the truth you were pointing out.” (Read a post from Outrageously Fruitful.)

7. End well. Your article has addressed one of the needs of your reader. What is the take away? Close your piece by urging him/her to take action. (For additional ways to wrap up your article, check out this post by Ali Luke.)

A good reason

I know that’s a lot to absorb, and I hope it isn’t overwhelming. Let me encourage you with this: You’re called to do your best at what the Lord has given you to do. And that includes writing.

You’re called to do your best at what the Lord has given you to do.

Here are two verses on the subject – one from the Old Testament penned by Solomon, and one from the New Testament written by Paul:

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might…Ecclesiastes 9:10a
And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.Colossians 3:23

As you apply these verses and tips, and continue to master the craft of writing, you’re developing a gift God has given you. I’m confident you will be blessed with readers when you focus on writing to honor Him. The Lord’s approval is what matters. Work hard and be the best writer you can be.

The Lord’s approval is what matters.
