You Can Make a Difference
When we know we won’t see someone for awhile, we tend to pay close attention to their every word. Following Jesus’ resurrection, right before He ascended into heaven, He spoke words to His disciples that are very important for us as well. Commonly referred to as the Great Commission, it’s clear Jesus gave us a job to do:
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Matthew 28:19-20; KJV
Missionaries Mark & Amy Coffey are putting Christ’s command into practice in the country of South Africa. When they were in the states recently, I had the privilege of talking to Amy about a special project they’re working on. You can watch the interview below:
Highlights
The idea for Camp Rhino came about when Mark began mentoring young men on the weekends. Most kids in South Africa are raised in single parent homes, oftentimes by an aunt or grandmother. Dad’s are rarely a part of the picture. As Mark stepped up to provide the nurture and godly training these young men needed, the concept of Camp Rhino was born.
Phase 1: raise $100,000 to purchase property
Update – when the video was recorded, $93,000 had been raised. To date, close to $130,000 has been raised for this project, and the Coffeys are back in South Africa looking at potential properties. You can stay up-to-date with the progress here.
Phase 2: build dormitories/chapel, etc.
There are currently no Christian camps in the area where the Coffeys live. Camp Rhino would serve as a Christ-centered refuge for boys and girls, offering all the fun of a traditional Christian camp while serving the bigger purpose of teaching the Bible and guiding kids who don’t have mentors in their lives.
