Craving God’s Presence or His Presents?

The ruler had everything going for him. He was young, wealthy, and he was probably handsome, too. But somewhere deep inside, he must have felt something was missing. A nagging doubt about his eternity motivated this man to find Jesus. The question tumbled from his lips:

. . . Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?Luke 18:18b

Jesus’ reference to obeying the Ten Commandments seemed to be a relief to the young man. He was confident he had upheld his end of the bargain. But Jesus’ next statement stunned him into silence:

. . . Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.Luke 18:22

Unwelcome words

Definitely not what the young ruler wanted to hear. His wealth gave him a comfortable life, power, and prestige. It was both his security and his identity – the most important things in his life. What Jesus was asking him to do was unthinkable. The man was deeply disappointed, but he willingly turned his back and walked away.

A thought-provoking story. One that makes me stop and consider what I’m clinging to.

Too often I find I’m not craving the presence of God, I’m craving the presents He gives.

Throughout history, it’s been a problem. I see Moses warning the children of Israel of this very thing before they even entered the Promised Land:

And it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not, 11 And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full; 12 Then beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.Deuteronomy 6:10-12

Don’t forget

Unfortunately, we know the end of the story – the Israelites forgot the Lord because they had everything they needed. Instead of thanking the Lord, the Israelites began relying on themselves. The Life Application Study Bible puts it this way:

“Prosperity, more than poverty, can dull our spiritual vision because it tends to make us self-sufficient and eager to acquire still more of everything – except God.” (p. 316)

A sad commentary.

I’d like to think my spiritual vision is 20/20, but I’d be fooling myself.

Time to do some soul-searching and get back to seeking God’s presence instead of His presents. And with Christmas only days away, it’s the perfect time to do so!

Your turn

What is most important in your life? What step will you take today to let any idols go and reconnect with your Creator?

Can I pray for you?

Heavenly Father, You are so good to me. Thank You for blessing me with Your presence. Forgive me for oftentimes paying more attention to the gifts You give than to You. Help me crave Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
