Stuff Doesn’t Satisfy
Stuff and things, gadgets and gizmos. It’s easy to let them consume our lives. My husband got me an Apple watch for my birthday and I guarantee I could have spent the entire evening playing around with every one of its super cool functions.
When we’re not using our stuff and things, gadgets and gizmos, we’re taking care of them– right? Replacing batteries, updating to latest versions, and making sure everything is working properly.
I realize technology is constantly changing and there is nothing wrong with keeping up with it. But in our quest to have the latest tools, is it possible that we’re missing a key ingredient? Contentment.
When is enough, enough?
Discontentment stems from not being satisfied.
Maybe we’re looking to our stuff for fulfillment, instead of looking to the One who allowed us to have the stuff in the first place.
Jesus warns us of running after things:
And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.Luke 12:15
A sobering thought when we’re constantly bombarded with ‘newer,’ ‘bigger,’ and ‘better.’ Somehow our focus needs to shift.
We need to return to the only thing that will truly satisfy: Jesus Christ.
Returning to the Source
Solomon was the wisest man who lived, and yet he struggled with contentment. He tried to find happiness in relationships with people and things – yet he failed miserably. His conclusion is found at the end of the book of Ecclesiastes:
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.Ecclesiastes 12:13
When we keep our gaze firmly focused on the One who gave us life, and consider who He is, we’re able to fill the void inside.
Blaise Pascal, Frech mathematician, physicist and religious philosopher, put it this way:
“What else does this craving, and this helplessness, proclaim but that there was once in man a true happiness, of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace? This he tries in vain to fill with everything around him, seeking in things that are not there the help he cannot find in those that are, though none can help, since this infinite abyss can be filled only with an infinite and immutable object; in other words by God himself.”
(Blaise Pascal, Pensees VII (425) )
We need look no further. Finding contentment in Christ makes us complete:
And ye are complete in him (Christ), which is the head of all principality and power:Colossians 3:10 (word in parentheses mine)

Heavenly Father, Thank You for being so patient with us. We wander daily and look to other things to make us happy and content. Forgive us. Turn our eyes to You and help us reverence You and find our contentment in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
