A few years ago, I had the brilliant idea to paint our master bathroom. Not able to draw a straight line with a pencil, let alone paint one with a brush, I opted to use painter’s tape to eliminate extra work. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning? On average, it usually takes me an hour. Showering is a breeze, it’s wrestling with my hair that keeps the clock ticking. Those of you with fine hair know what I’m talking about. We applaud the invention of hairspray and look forward to those days of little to no humidity. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating, but you get the point.

As Christians, we can easily err one of two ways—we either develop a Pharisaical attitude where we begin to feel as if we have it all together and have “arrived” in our faith, so to speak. Or, we live as if we’ve never been changed, as if our old nature still has power over us. In the first example, we focus on performance instead of Christ in us. In the second, we focus on our fight against sin instead of growing our relationship with Christ.
