Let Your Light Shine

– Guest Post by Amy Menter –

Have you ever stopped to consider that the God who spoke the light into existence is the same God who gives you the opportunity to know Him personally? (click to tweet) Today I have the privilege of sharing a second devotional written by my good friend, Amy Menter. May it move you to draw even closer to the Savior.

For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.2 Corinthians 4:6

The gift

Take this in for a minute….God hath shined in our hearts.  God, who commanded with the word of His power, “Let there be light and there was light,” (Genesis 1:3) is the very One who shined in my heart.  And when He did, he lit up my darkness so that I could know and partake of the most precious gift I’ve ever received …. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Wonderful Counselor, the Lamb of God… my personal Lord and Savior.

I’m so humbled by this joyous reality.  It wells up within me such love, adoration and worship for my God. For the One who created light and all that I can see in this world has done an equally marvelous work in me – lighting my soul with the beauty of Himself and the triumph of His grace.

And His light continues to shine into my heart, brightly revealing to me the glory of the face of Jesus Christ more and more.  And I, like the Psalmist, have said:

When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek. Psalm 27:8

Seeking His face

When you say you seek the face of Jesus what does that look like for you?  I know for me, thinking of seeking His face reminds me of experiences in my most intimate relationships.  For example, I know and love the face of my husband.  I can read his look and know just about what he is thinking or what he is feeling.  I can see many things in his face, including his love, his concern and his compassion.

While the details of my husband’s face are well known to me, do you, like me, ever wonder what Jesus’ face looks like?  For He is the image of the invisible God, so to say His face is glorious is only just the beginning of His description.

So as He shines His knowledge in my heart when I seek Him, by faith, I see His face (click to tweet).  And this was made even clearer to me recently when I was sharing with a dear friend how I really am seeking and waiting for some answers from the Lord about some major life decisions: not simply for those answers, but for the longing of my heart, which is to see His nod.  Not just to get His ‘yes.’ It’s about so much more than that.

So others can see

It’s about getting to see His smile, His expressions of comfort and His pleasure with me.  But also, and most importantly, it is about seeing that what I’ve sought in Him brings the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ to the surface of my life so that many others may see His light shine into their hearts also – in His face, they may find all the expressions of love, goodness, healing and grace they will ever need.

Your turn

Have you experienced the light of Christ shining in your heart? As you seek the Lord today, will you let His light shine out of you and illuminate those around you?

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, Thank You for inviting me to seek Your face. You’re the very One who created the universe and still You desire a close relationship with me. Help me be so close to You that Your reflection is what other’s see. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

About Amy

Amy Menter has been a licensed  independent social worker for the past 4 years.  She’s currently venturing out into private practice with a well-known Christian counseling practice in her area with opportunities to counsel, among others, young women rescued out of domestic and foreign sex trafficking.  Also, for 16 years, she served beside her husband in several churches as he pastored and led souls to Christ. Amy engaged in women’s ministry and taught teen girls.

Her desire for writing first emerged as a teenager, when she’d write poems to express her feelings or outlook on life.  This hobby continued into her early twenties, when after she was saved, she wrote several poems about spiritual truths she discovered in God’s Word.

Her writing re-emerged in graduate school, when she wrote an article/research paper that her professor ended up publishing in The Journal of Health and Social Work.  From there, Amy’s real hunger for writing came in the form of what she calls her devotional responses to the Lord as she had her Bible reading and prayer time.  These were formed from intimate fellowship with Christ.  As a result, this writing means more to her than all the others, because it is where she’s meditated upon His Word day and night, grown closer to Him, and become exposed and authentic before her Savior, Counselor, Refuge and Lord.
