Timeless Lessons for a New Year

Maria I. MorganBlog Archive, Understanding God's Truth

The truth? I’ve done a lot of thinking about my purpose and direction as a writer for this New Year. Toward the end of 2014, when writing became a chore rather than a joy, I knew something had to change.

Taking a break and evaluating my responsibilities has given me a new perspective. And also shown me some areas where I’ve gotten tripped up.

His timeless truth

I love the timelessness of God’s Word (click to tweet). It doesn’t matter what portion of Scripture I read, there’s always something I can take away if I’m paying attention. Wouldn’t you know, God chose to use the Old Testament book of Jeremiah to remind me of some important things.

Jeremiah was known as the weeping prophet. Tender-hearted, and compassionate, he was called by God to deliver an unpopular message to the nation of Israel. Jeremiah’s response was one I can relate to:

Then said I, Ah, Lord God! Behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child. Jeremiah 1:6

Have you ever responded like this when you know God has asked you to do something specific? I know I have. God’s response is encouraging:

But the Lord said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord…Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. Jeremiah 1:7-8, 9b

A clear lesson

God equipped Jeremiah for the job He gave Him to do. God will also equip you and me.

But along the way, it’s easy for me to get caught up in the comparison game. Sometimes I find myself trapped by jealous thoughts. They begin like this:  Her ministry is reaching more people than mine. Her books are selling better than mine. If only I had her network of readers…And the list goes on indefinitely.

The Lord wants me to be faithful with what He’s given me to do. Not with what He’s given someone else to accomplish.

I’m to share His truth right where I am – with the people He’s brought across my path (click to tweet).

A reminder

The first chapter of Jeremiah reminded me of something else important: God’s Word isn’t always met with open arms. Many people will reject His message.

For a recovering approval addict, that truth is hard to deal with. My responsibility is to share God’s truth. I’m not responsible for how people respond to it.

Check out what God told Jeremiah in his day:

And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the Lord, to deliver thee. Jeremiah 1:19

The bottom line? The people would reject the message God gave Jeremiah to deliver. But in His mercy, the Lord had Jeremiah speak to the people anyway. The mission wasn’t about Jeremiah, rather it was about God. He wanted to warn His people again. And God was with Jeremiah the entire time.

Your turn

What is God nudging you to do? Know that He will equip you. Stay focused on the task before you, not what others are accomplishing. Remember not everyone will approve of or accept what you’re doing. The important thing is to obey the Lord, and praise Him for His constant presence.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for giving me the opportunity to be involved in Your work. I know the job You want me to do is different than what You have for others. Help me be faithful, knowing You are with me every step of the way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
