Rock Solid

Rock Solid

I was born in the mid-60’s. A lot has changed since then. Throughout the years, men and women in prominent positions passed laws that have legalized abortion and redefined marriage. Things certainly were not perfect when I was growing up and it seems we’re drifting further and further away from God’s plan as the years go by.

None of it catches God by surprise. He inspired the apostle Paul to write the following words to Timothy as a heads up:

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come…But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
2 Timothy 3:1 and 13

An encouraging truth

Even though these verses aren’t full of cheer, and what’s happening in our world today can get pretty discouraging, God is still faithful. We still get to partner with Him to share His truth.

We can still count on Him. He is our Rock.

Rocks are amazing things. They can offer shade and shelter in the wilderness. They’re used as a reliable building material. They’re strong. I like one of the definitions given in the Encarta Dictionary: “a stable, dependable, or supportive person or thing, especially in times of trouble.” Sounds just like our God, doesn’t it?

David’s experience

Year after year, the psalmist David experienced these characteristics to be true of God as he dodged his enemy, King Saul. No sooner would King Saul pledge to leave David alone and return to his palace, then he would angrily hunt him down again. I can only imagine how distraught David got playing this dangerous game of hide and seek.

But it was through these times of stress and strain that David learned that God was dependable and supportive – the Rock he so desperately needed.

Read the inspiring words David penned when he was on the other side of difficulty; when God had given him victory over King Saul:

“…The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; The God of my rock; in him will I trust: my high tower, and my refuge, my savior; thou savest me from violence. I will call on the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.”
2 Samuel 22:2-4

Although I doubt any of us are literally being chased by enemies, we go through tough times too. But when our trials come, do we trust God and cling to the Rock? I have to admit that sometimes my faith is shaky. But when I start to wobble, the Lord is faithful to reach out His hand and steady me with the Rock of His presence.

Your turn

Are there trials in your life that are leaving your faith shaken? What step will you take today to cling to God as your Rock?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank You for being my Rock. You are my shelter in the storms of life. Thank You for the example of David who learned You were dependable and faithful through every trial He faced. Help me grow in grace and in the knowledge of You. You are so good to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
