Stay Safe & Secure

Who doesn’t love a castle? Although I wouldn’t sign up to live in one, the moats, drawbridges and thick walls outdo my security system any day of the week. Castles were built to keep intruders out while the occupants stayed safe and sound inside.

I’m not preparing any boiling oil to pour on intruders, or keeping an eye out for flaming arrows that would set my house on fire, but I’m aware that I am in a battle:

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”Ephesians 6:12

Invisible battle

The battle I’m in may be invisible, but it is very real

  • What if I fail?

  • What if I get a terminal illness?

  • What if my husband loses his job?

  • What if finances run out?

  • What if my kids get in an accident?

  • What if a natural disaster occurs?

The weapons used by the enemy often pose as innocent “what if” scenarios. Things like:

You get the idea – and the list is endless. Satan tries to paralyze us with fear

When fear knocks on the door of your heart, you can welcome it in, or you can seek refuge in the Lord

Who He is

Over and over in scripture, God is referred to as a refuge. It’s part of who He is:

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1
Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.Psalm 57:1
Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah. Psalm 62:8Psalm 62:8

The Key

I love that the Lord gives us a ‘key’ that ushers us into His presence every time. Did you catch it in the previous verses? It’s trust. Exercising faith in our big God allows Him to shelter and protect us from the things that are threatening, harmful, or unpleasant. And thinking about ‘what is’ instead of ‘what if’ will send the enemy packing.

Long ago, God proved Himself to be a refuge for David when he fled from Saul, fought in battles, and was betrayed by his own son, Absalom. How comforting to know I can lean on the same trustworthy God as my refuge. So can you.

Your turn

What situation or potential fear are you facing today? How has God proven Himself to be your refuge in the past? What step will you take to trust Him as your refuge today?

Can I pray for you?

Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your greatness. Each of Your names gives me one more glimpse of Your goodness and insight into who You are. In addition to being Creator, God Almighty, the Lord of Hosts, and my Shepherd – You are my Refuge. Help me trust You to shelter and protect me during life’s storms. I am safe with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
